- The Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery has a rich four-generation legacy beginning in the late 1800s with Julian P. "Pappy" Van Winkle, Sr., who co-founded the iconic Stitzel-Weller Distillery. Known for producing celebrated brands like W.L. Weller and Old Fitzgerald, the Van Winkles sold the distillery in 1972 but retained rights to the Old Rip Van Winkle label, which Julian Jr. revived using whiskey stocks from the original distillery. Today, under the stewardship of Julian III and his son Preston, the Van Winkle tradition of crafting high-quality wheated bourbon continues in partnership with Buffalo Trace Distillery, maintaining the family’s strict standards of excellence.
