Innovation comes in many forms, and in 2019 our Master Blender, Stephanie Macleod, released a new range of Blended Scotch Whiskies with a Four Stage Ageing Process for Ultimate Smoothness. This may sound like an indulgence, but the series has been picking up gold medal awards the world over since being released. We believe that to do things right and get the best results you should put in double the effort; everything else is just a job half done. So, we asked ourselves how we could put in double the effort to our range that was already Double Aged for Extra Smoothness, and it was obvious, double it!
The Double Double Series has been aged, blended, aged again, then finished in sherry casks for the Ultimate Smoothness. The unique Four Stage Ageing Process for Ultimate Smoothness finished in Pedro Ximenez Sherry Casks. The first step involves single malts and single grains which have been aged separately at least 32 years. Next, the single malts are blended together and rested in exhausted casks. This process is also done for the single grains. Then, the blended single malts and blended single grains are blended together and again rested in exhausted casks. Finally, the blended scotch finishes its maturation in sherry casks. For the 32 year, it is finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry, this brings rich, ripe treacle notes with a hint of smokiness and the silky-smooth finish.
- Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Rich, notes of coffee, dark red wine, and roasted nuts immediately dominate an aromatic profile that is almost hoary with weight.
- Palate: It is equally rich, with bold coffee and cola notes, along with some chocolate.
- Finish: It is enduring but sharp and a bit tight, showing fortified wine notes and plenty more of that classic PX character. One to really pore over as it slowly reveals its charms.
